Many times I have to face this question, “Why don’t you make games like COD or Skyrim?” They sell so well and they are so well received by the public. Well, the answer to that question is that I (and my game studio) simply cannot afford to make a 3D action game like COD or Skyrim or Witcher. It takes a lot of time, money and effort to make these games and make them look good and make them sell. Indie studios (like my own) don’t take up the development of such games because they know that they won’t be able to do justice to the genre or maybe they won’t even be able to put it together in the first place.
This is very important. New indie studios cannot immediately start developing 3D action games mainly because they don’t have the resources to do so (unless they are backed by a bigger company which is the case with Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild).
Indie studios have to be creative and innovative if they want to stand out and differentiate their games from other games and sell a few copies of it. That is why you see so many types of indie games and their mechanisms and art styles are so different and innovative. There have been many examples in which innovation has backfired on the studios as well. So, it is a double edged sword. And that is also why AAA companies don’t do anything radically different than what they have been doing for the past many years.
In this video I just wanted to tell that the indie studio only makes the types of games which they can make properly. For example, my game studio (Redseed Game Studio http://www.redseed.cc) can only make visual novels for the time being. This is because I am good at making visual novels and I can coordinate its development very well. This is also because making visual novels is not extremely resource and time consuming.
There also have been many studios that have gone from indie status to AAA status and have started making AAA games. There also are many studios that are borderline AAA and they have received funding from bigger companies to make the games they make. So, if you are an indie studio you must not beat yourself up by looking at what these other indies are doing. You don’t know their story, maybe they are backed up by some company, maybe they have been in the game for a very long time and have been commercially successful with their games. You should do what you can do best and keep on improving. Shoot for the stars but beware that it will take time to build that spaceship. 🙂 In the meantime keep shooting for light bulbs.
